Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long before I notice results?
Most patients start noticing improvements in symptoms within 2–6 weeks, with full benefits typically achieved in 3–6 months.
Q: Is BHRT safe?
When monitored by experienced medical professionals, BHRT is considered safe and effective. We use precise dosing and regular testing to ensure your treatment remains within healthy levels.
Q: Are bioidentical hormones different from traditional hormone therapy?
Yes. Bioidentical hormones are molecularly identical to the hormones your body naturally produces, which can lead to better compatibility and fewer side effects compared to synthetic options.
Q: What are bioidentical hormones?
Bioidentical hormones are hormones that are structurally identical to your own hormones. They are prescribed for a hormonal medical condition such as perimenopause and menopause for females and androgen deficiency in males. Our body recognizes them as our own.
Q: How do we test for Hormone Imbalance at Evia Medical Center?
We test for hormone imbalance by utilizing both bloodwork and saliva testing. As a patient you are given the saliva kit in the office and instructions on how to perform the test at home. Results usually take about 7-10 days. The bloodwork is drawn at your lab.
Q: What specific hormones are tested in the saliva testing?
The hormones tested are three types of Estrogens( Estradiol, Estriol and Estrone) , Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA-Sulfate, AM cortisol and we can also add a four point cortisol test to see how your body is handling stress.
Q: How long is a hormone consult with a physician?
The consultation is about 1 hour long. We want to hear your story and you will not be rushed. Forming trust in a provider takes time and we understand that.
You will be asked to fill out a hormone questionnaire at the office before seeing the physician.
Q: How do I know if I need a hormone consult?
If you aren’t sure if you need bioidentical hormones, the physician will meet with you and guide you on what they feel is the best course of action in treating your medical complaints. You may not need or may not be a candidate for bioidentical hormones. We will find a way to help you. We are a functional medicine practice and as such have many tools in our toolbox.
Q: How is a hormone imbalance treated?
Bioidentical hormones are plant based generally made out of yams or soy. They come in various forms such as a topical cream, oral capsule, vaginal suppository, etc. Treatment will depend on your symptoms and blood and saliva results.
Bioidentical hormones are ordered by the physician and custom made for you by a compounding pharmacy that is PCAB accredited ( these are not found at the local CVS, Walmart etc. ). A compounding pharmacy makes individualized medications for your own unique needs following the physician’s orders.
As a functional medicine/integrative medicine practice we understand the body as a whole. Hence our approach is comprehensive. Not only will we test hormones but you will get in depth bloodwork to see if there are any other causes for your medical symptoms. We look for the root cause of your symptoms. We also focus on nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, pharmaceutical grade supplements, acupuncture and medical massage as part of your own unique treatment plan.
Q: Can you treat Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?
Yes. We use a functional medicine approach regularly to help women with PCOS . This often includes pharmaceutical grade supplements, nutritional support and dietary changes as well as prescription medications.
Q: What is the difference between synthetic hormones and bioidentical hormones?
Synthetic hormones are manufactured to mimic the actions of your own hormones but the structure differs from your own hormones. This can lead to similar but not identical actions to your hormones and can also allow for increased risk of side effects. Bioidentical hormones are made from plants and are identical in molecular structure to your own hormones. This allows identical biochemical reactions to your hormones and reduces the risks of side effects compared to synthetic hormones.
Oral contraception ( birth control pills) are synthetic hormones.
Q: What if I am still menstruating?
Many of our patients are still menstruating but can still benefit from BHRT. The saliva testing will give us insight into what is going on inside your body. You do not have to be menopausal to benefit from BHRT.
Q: Does Bioidentical Hormone Replacement therapy cause cancer?
Much of the negativity regarding HRT stems from the misinterpretation of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study in 2002, which led to a worldwide reduction in HRT use. There were many flaws in the study but a main one was the population was given synthetic hormones and we know modern bioidentical hormones have a much better safety profile. Bioidentical hormones may actually offer breast protection in the appropriate individual.
Q: Can hormone replacement help osteoporosis?
Yes! Approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and about another 20 million have osteopenia (weak bones not severe enough to be called osteoporosis). Unfortunately, most of the prescription medications used to treat osteoporosis are limited in their results and can carry significant side effects. BHRT can help prevent and treat weak bones. In addition to building and maintaining muscle and an anti-inflammatory protein rich diet, bioidentical hormones can protect your bones.
